Wiebke von Carolsfeld follows her acclaimed 2002 debut Marion Bridge with this finely observed adaptation of the novel by Aislinn Hunter. Dermot (Aidan Quinn) is a historian reeling from a personal tragedy, who has isolated himself in a crumbling farmhouse on the rugged west coast of Ireland. His lover Abbey (Taylor Schilling, Orange is the New Black) is happy to hide out there with him — until she discovers that she's pregnant, which forces her to examine not only her relationship with Dermot, but also her feelings about her alcoholic father (Michael Ironside) and long-lost mother. As Abbey returns home to Montreal to contemplate her next step, Dermot takes a young boy under his wing — and reluctantly finds himself being drawn back into the world.
